As far was we can tell, we were only the fifth or sixth film crew that was ever allowed to film in Eritrea. It’s a delicate situation there, and they very much do not allow film crews in. It only achieved its independence about 25 years ago after a very long civil war. Very difficult to get entry or when trying to leave. The third place, and probably the most fascinating from a filmmaking point of view, was shooting in Eritrea in the capital city there, Asmara. A very vibrant, modern metropolis that’s growing like crazy every day in every direction, and it’s very sort of hip and fun. Then we also did the capital of Ethiopia, where Lelisa Desisa lived and trained. The real event we shot in Monza, Italy, but the real passionate part of filming was shot in Kenya for Eliud Kipchoge in a place called Eldoret, which is near the famous running town in Kenya. We shot in New Hampshire where the scientists did their aerodynamic testing. MDR: We shot in a bunch of places in the U.S. Martine Desmond Roe, director of the ”Nike #Breaking2” documentary. So I really hope this can be an opportunity to let these guys talk for themselves and tell their own stories. I think that a lot of times with these elite distance runners, their English isn’t necessarily amazing, and so they’ll go up and clock in some astronomically amazing time in the marathon and they’ll have the interview afterward, which is usually a little awkward, especially after Berlin when you have someone speaking in German to someone speaking Kalenjin. I’ve been back a lot of times on different projects, and I really wanted to see this as an opportunity to tell these guys’ stories from their point of view without using too many voiceovers or too many experts. I lived there for a year when I was a teenager. I spent a lot of time in East Africa for various other projects.
